Adobe's Photoshop is taking a leap forward in the realm of artificial intelligence. The company is enhancing its suite of generative AI models, known as Firefly, with a new feature that allows users to ‘uncrop' images.
This new feature, aptly named Generative Expand, is currently available in Photoshop's beta version. It allows users to enlarge and resize images simply by clicking and dragging the Crop tool, which in turn expands the canvas. Once you hit the ‘Generate' button on Photoshop's taskbar, Generative Expand fills the newly created white space with AI-generated content that seamlessly blends with the existing image.
Imagine a scenario where your subject is cut off, your image doesn't fit the desired aspect ratio, or perhaps an object in focus isn't aligned with the rest of the image. Adobe suggests that you can use Generative Expand to enlarge your canvas and transform your image into anything you envision.
The generated content can be added to a canvas via Generative Expand, with or without a text prompt. If a prompt is used, the expanded images will include any content mentioned in the prompt. This content is added as a new layer in Photoshop, giving users the option to discard it if it doesn't meet their expectations.
Adobe has implemented filters to prevent Generative Expand from creating inappropriate content, a known issue with generative art AI. These filters are applied to text prompts and also to the variations returned from the model, in an attempt to catch and automatically hide any inappropriate content.
While Photoshop Generative Expand isn't a groundbreaking feature in the world of generative AI (OpenAI, Midjourney, and Stability AI's DreamStudio have long offered similar tools), its integration with Photoshop is Adobe's unique selling point. Considering Photoshop's global user base of approximately 29 million, this is a strategic move.
One drawback, however, is that Generative Expand isn't currently available for commercial use. But Adobe plans to change this in the second half of this year.
In addition to Generative Expand, Adobe also announced expanded language support for Photoshop's Firefly-powered text-to-image features, which have been used to generate over 900 million images so far. This support now extends to over 100 languages, including Arabic, Czech, Greek, and Thai. Both these features are available in the Photoshop beta as of today.
